Medewi, Bali---waves

I am staying at a place near Medewi, on the west side of Bali. The village life here feels like a blast from the past (maybe how Kuta beach was 40 years ago) Its paradise for me: surfing, durian, laid back village life with cows and chickens all around the beaches, plenty of delicious ripe fruits (mango, papaya, pineaple, snakefruit, avocado, oranges, watermenlon, green melon, bananas) available at the market and beachfront Warung (Gede's place).

My homestay (KIDING homestay, no sign though) is with a family that has a few rooms attatched to their living arrangements. I get to observe their daily life from my wooden chair out front my room. The children at this home are crawling around in the dirt, sand, or grass under the coconut trees, no need for diapers.Today the home maker was shredding coconut for coconut curry. Yesterday they all shared durian with me. The father is building another two rooms out back and his boys are helping out. The cost is 30,000 rupiahs/night (aprox $3). I am renting a surfboard for 30,000/day ($3/day). The 19year old boy at this home is taking me to the nearby beach breaks for uncrowded delightful surfing, and getting me durian.

I am spending my mornings surfing, then eating fruit on the beach. Mid day reading and resting in hamock on beach Or taking a nap in my bed with my fan on me. Hanging out with the cows (some cows allow you to pet them).
Evenings surfing on a neverending beach break with endless views of coconut trees and rice fields.
The water is about 85degrees! I've never felt warmer water then here.

I am planning on staying around here for a couple weeks.

to get here?:
easiest.....Hire a drive to get here is about 300,000 ($30) rupiah.....
A cheaper way To get here, you can take a bemo, or a bus from Denpasar bus station. Bus to MEDEWI approx $50,000rupiah ($5).

When the bus drops you off on the main road, walk down towards the beach. Look for "Medewi Beach Cottages" (i am not staying here, this is a more upscale and costs 150,000 rupiahs/ night. ITs easy to find...My homestay is appox 100meters before Medewi Beach Cottages, across from the little soccor (football) field. NO sign here, just ask around for "DD", the guy that eats lots of durian.

IF you are thirsty for some fruit smoootihes, head to Gede's Place, near "Medewi Beach Cottages", on the beach front...they have all types of Ripe fruit to buy or to have them make smoothies for you!

I really hope you come visit Medewi! Here is my take on this Jewel of a place..............

2000 calories of bread and starbucks Frap

today after i nice bike ride (rented a bike today for $2),i was hangin out front of The huge Discovery mall that sits on the beach near Kuta. I was drinking a freshly squeezed amazingly sweet Orange Juice that I bought at New Zealand Natural (a commercialized juice bar that does a great job with having ripe fruit).
a few tables away i observed a family of 4 sit down with a big bag of breads and pastries purchased from BreadTalk ( a pastry buffet smorgasbord type place where you grab a tray and a set of Tongs and load up).
The two overweight men polished off 4 big pastries each and one 20ounce Frapiccino with whip cream. They were enjoying this meal very much and i could relate when i used to eat this.
The size and thickness and variety of toppings on each pastry made them approx 400 calories each. the frap is probably 500 calories.

It just goes to show how we do eat alot of food on a 'normal', western death diet, so we must remember to eat plenty of fruit if we are switching to a fruit diet. The equivalance of fruit for that 2000 calorie meal would be approx 20 good sized Bananas! If I sat next to that same family and peeled and ate 20 natural good sized bananas straight from the mother earth I may be the freak that needed help. I doubt i could even have a conversation with them....me with my shirt off, barefeet, sunhat, dark tan, and goatee and wolfing down bananas? nah, not goanna doit.......actually i will, ehehee.D

Bodhisattva in metro

This is a great video to remind us all not to take life to seriously.

Im in Bali now and loving the contrast of Australia! Bali seems to have so much smiling happy energy in the air that is contagious...im smiling more already....maybe thats a novelty, maybe its the Asian love affair i have...maybe its the Durian on the street corners that smell so nice...

I had an amzing fruit called a "Wani"...like a white mango....try blending one of these for a real natural milkshake (no cow pus or drug infested dairy).

picture: Robert showing me upside down world

flew up to Cairns for Akee, durian, and old friends....

spending time on Clint's Farm again (aka Fruitopia).
Im finding Akee everyday on the trees. When its ready to eat, it is opened up and you can see the cheese fruit and the black round seed. That is when I get excited and climb the small tree or jump up to reach it. I love the 'hunt' for good ripe fruit.
The Akee has a flavor of Sharp cheese and some rich nut all in one. It also has an ocasional taste of clams or muscles. It is chewy fruit, with some slight crunchyness. if you chew it up and then spit it in your hand it looks all milky. I havent eaten enough to be full on it as the suppy is not abundant yet. I feel like eating about 10 akee fruits then i feel satisfied, but then i am ready to eat some other fruit 2 hours later.
How do I rate AKEE??? I love it. I rate it on my top 5 fruits. it is a Savory fruit for sure. I love eating it later in the day after I have had plenty of juicier fruits.

Robert and I had some great farm time....we went up the Bump trail and swam alot and devoured durian daily. He picked me up at Cairns airport with 10kilo of durian smelling up the car, we ate it at the airport parking lot.

Judith and Adrian came by Clints. They brought a bunch of Akee that was as ripe as possible almost going over to rancid. This is the best taste I find and texture as it is ultra soft and sharp bitter cheesy taste. The even slightly dehydrated some in a dehydrator to perserve it, and the color changes to cheddar chees color and it becomes ultra rich, bitter, sharp and intense tooo strong for most, but I loved it, ehehehhe...more, more, more...

Judith made me a shreded coconut with sprouted mungbeans and dried mushrooms and Fresh Tomatos ('Oxheart'), and Rocket all mixed together.....WOW!! I got such a great feeling eatin this and the taste was nice....She Said the Harley used to live with them back at the beginning of raw and he was eating lots of this yummy stuff.

Robert brought me 25 kilo of Australian Durian out to Clints farm. We all feasted for breakfast...Me, Mango, Kvieta, Robert, Ian, Michelle.....I love the Au durian, but i do think of Mosang King or monthong as I am eating this durian. I have found the frozen monthong from the Asian market in Cairns is very nice, so I am getting a few of those to eat with my Australian durian too.

Runing from the farm out to the main road to town takes 15minutes...thats the record for Harley to beat!

The peanut butter fruit is very nice too!!

The farm has Keet Mangos now, papaya, jakfruit and plenty of ice cream beans and bananas.

Robert's farm had some Abiu for me to eat....wow! i love that....he had some Mamay sapotes...some MARANG!! jack fruit....yello rambutans very sweet, mangosteens, young coconuts to drink

The Port Douglas market was cool vibe...i did drink the sugar cane juice...i missed the pinapple crush

Bicycling into Mareeba today brings back memories of the retreat when my dad was here too.

The creek is flowing very strong, and I am spending some hours down in other areas, rock jumping, swiming, and laying around naked practicing naturalism.

I think of surfing in Bryon a bit and being with Harley and Freelea and Nick and Jess, and may be back soon....maybe I meet up with you all in Newcastle with CRis?
